Like any skill or art form worth your time, writing memoir is both fun and challenging. The distinction is important: when we write with some awareness that we may eventually show these words to others, our writing shifts in some critical ways. We tend to:
Push ourselves to explain shorthand phrases, people, events, relationships etc that others wouldn't understand without sufficient context
Shape the voice on the page more
Push ourselves to analyze or explore unexpected connections, phrases, or ideas
Over the years, I've pulled together a number of lessons that I've come to think of as "5 Keys to Writing a Really Great Memoir."
